Dear Members of Agland Coop:
Your Board of Directors is sending this letter to inform you that we have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to merge our cooperative together with Tabor Lumber Coop in Tabor, SD.
As you are aware, the ability to be profitable in agriculture grows more challenging each year. The same is true for Agland Coop and the Agri-services economy in general. Large agribusinesses, often lacking local ownership or control, are increasingly influencing market prices through economies of scale and efficiency.
This is narrowing our profit margins and putting pressure on our working capital, which may limit our ability to fund future capital improvements and invest in new growth opportunities. Your Board has always met challenges head-on. With over 87 years of service to this community, we believe this potential merger is the right step to secure our long-term strength and independence as a locally controlled cooperative.
Tabor Lumber Coop shares many of the same values that have guided us over the years. Both cooperatives are financially sound, locally rooted, and committed to serving their members. Our services, locations, and cultures align well. As your elected Board of Directors, we are confident that this merger will allow us to continue providing the high level of service you expect, while creating new opportunities for growth and stability and protecting the value of your equity in the cooperative.
Throughout this process, we, along with the board of directors at Tabor Lumber Coop, are committed to ensuring the resulting cooperative continues its strong support for our local communities.
You can rest assured that this LOI will have no changes in day-to-day operations, services, or staffing.
As outlined in our bylaws, this decision ultimately belongs to you, the members. A vote of eligible members from both cooperatives will determine the outcome.
We also want to give you the opportunity to ask questions and learn more. An open house will be held at the American Legion in Parkston on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 from 3-6PM and on Thursday, June 4th,2026 from 3-6 P.M at the Armour Fire Hall. We encourage you to attend. If you would like to speak with someone sooner, please do not hesitate to reach out to manager Mark Endres or any member of the Board.
Ballots are anticipated to be mailed to eligible voting members in late June, with results expected by the end of July. We will continue to provide updates as the process moves forward.
